Mercor AI interview: what to expect and how to prepare
By AI Global Work editorial team · Facts checked Nov 7 · live numbers update daily
Short answer
Mercor's AI interviewer asks role-specific questions for about 20 minutes, records a transcript and scores you for the listing. Take the free practice interview first, use Chrome on a computer, and save your three retakes for technical problems: hiring managers can see your retake count.
How the interview works
- An AI interviewer asks questions specific to the role, transcribes your answers and evaluates you for that listing.
- Most interviews take about 20 minutes. Some are technical deep-dives into your experience; others test language or reasoning.
- It is in English unless the listing says otherwise. Captions are on by default.
- You only take each unique interview once: if another application needs the same one, your result carries over.
Before you start
- Take the free Practice Interview. It isn't tied to any application and doesn't affect future opportunities.
- Use Google Chrome (latest) on a laptop or desktop. Edge and Safari are supported; Firefox is not. Some interviews won't run on a phone.
- Test your camera, microphone and speakers in the waiting room. Headphones and an external mic help.
- Sit somewhere quiet with your full face visible. Have pen and paper, and a calculator if relevant.
- Some interviews need full-screen sharing or include a whiteboard that saves automatically.
During the interview
- Keep answers clear and avoid long silences: the AI may cut in. If it does, tell it you weren't finished.
- Ask it to repeat or clarify a question when you need to.
- If the AI stops responding, wait 30 to 60 seconds, then refresh and rejoin.
- Don't use ChatGPT or other AI tools to write your answers. Mercor allows grammar checks only.
Retakes
You can retake an official interview up to three times across all applications that use it, from the Assessments tab. A retake resets your application progress and replaces your previous attempt, and the waiting room notes that hiring managers can see your retake count. Keep retakes for technical problems.
After the interview
Your dashboard shows each application's remaining steps and whether it is ready to submit. Submitted applications stay under review until the hiring team decides, and you're told by email. Mercor says it can't give individual feedback on rejections. Mercor keeps your recordings and transcript to evaluate you and says it doesn't use them to train AI models or sell them.
